Online Returns in the UK: What to Check Before You Buy

Understand UK online cancellation periods, return costs, exclusions and faulty-item rights, then use this checklist before placing an order.

Short answer: For many eligible goods bought online in the UK, you can tell the seller you want to cancel within 14 days after delivery, then have another 14 days to return the goods. Exceptions apply, and a change-of-mind return is different from a faulty, damaged, incorrect or misdescribed item. Check the retailer’s instructions and costs before ordering.

A good return decision begins before checkout. The policy should be easy to find and clear enough that you know what to do if the item does not suit you or arrives with a problem.

Change of mind and product problems are not the same

Six things to read before you buy

  1. The cancellation window. Note when it begins and how the seller wants to be notified.
  2. The return deadline. Cancelling and physically returning the item can be two separate steps.
  3. Excluded products. Personalised goods, certain sealed hygiene products and rapidly deteriorating goods may be treated differently.
  4. Return cost and method. Check whether you pay return postage for a change of mind and whether a large item needs a specialist collection.
  5. Condition requirements. You can normally inspect an online purchase as you would in a shop, but excessive handling that reduces value may affect the refund.
  6. Refund timing and scope. Check when the refund is processed and how standard delivery charges are handled.

Make a return easier

Keep the order confirmation and do not discard packaging until you have checked the item. Open it carefully, confirm all parts, and test only as far as reasonably necessary to understand it. Photograph damage before assembly or use. Contact the retailer through the published route and keep the reply. When posting a return, use the instructed address and keep proof of sending or collection.

Do not send a parcel to a registered office, supplier or address printed on the original package unless the retailer has told you that it is the correct returns destination. Using the wrong address can delay or lose the return.

Meeru Finds return process

The current Meeru Finds policy says UK customers buying eligible products online may notify the store of cancellation within 14 days after the day the product is delivered, then return it within a further 14 days. Return authorisation is required before sending anything back. The policy asks for the order number, full name, product and relevant photographs for a damaged, defective or incorrect item.

The policy also lists change-of-mind exclusions and condition requirements. Read the complete Meeru Finds refund policy for the item you are considering and contact Meeru Finds before returning it. Do not assume the registered office or the address on the parcel is the returns warehouse.

Frequently asked questions

Do UK online shops have to accept every return?

No. Cancellation rights apply to many distance purchases, but there are exceptions. Faulty, damaged, incorrect and misdescribed goods are also treated differently from a simple change of mind.

Are online returns always free?

No. A retailer may require the customer to pay return postage for a change-of-mind return if the required information was provided. Do not confuse return postage with the refund of the standard outbound delivery charge. Check the current policy for the exact purchase.

Must I keep the original packaging?

Original packaging can make a safe return easier, but the legal position is not simply “no box, no rights”. Handle and package the item reasonably, follow the retailer’s instructions, and keep evidence. Product-specific conditions and exceptions still matter.
